Airwars assessment
On Wednesday, November 1, 2023, at least 86 civilians, including at least 25 women and at least 30 children, were reported killed, hundreds were reportedly injured, including men, women and children, and more than 60 civilians remained missing under the rubble after an alleged Israeli airstrike on the house of Abu Eida family and eight other houses located in the al-Faluja/Safi area of the Jabalia Refugee Camp near the “Six Martyrs Roundabout” in the North Gaza region of the Gaza Strip. Nine residential houses were reportedly destroyed.
Airwars has identified the names of all 86 civilians killed in the incident based on tributes on social media to the victims, as well as by matching names with the Palestinian Ministry of Health lists of fatalities.
Around midday on November 1, Twitter/X users @hmeteir and @Yasser_Gaza reported that “a new massacre is now being committed by the [Israeli military] in Jabalia camp near the “Six Martyrs Roundabout” in the areas of the Abu Eida and Abu Sharia families. #Gaza.” Anadolu Agency reported that “on Wednesday evening, Israeli fighter jets carried out another raid on the camp, causing extensive damage to dozens of homes.” According to Ramallah News, “the Israeli bombing in al-Faluja destroyed nine houses on top of their residents, leading to the collapse and injury of very large numbers of citizens.”
On November 2, CNN reported that “a strike on Wednesday… in [Jabalia] killed at least 80 people and injured hundreds more, according to Dr. Atef Al Kahlout, the director of Gaza’s Indonesian hospital. He told CNN more bodies were being dug out of the rubble, and the majority of casualties were women and children.”
A few days after the strike, a Facebook page for the Abu Eida Family shared “the names of the martyrs of the Abu Eida clan massacre (80 martyrs).” Faloura Nouman Ibrahim al-Masri, Mahmoud Husnen Madi, and Journalist Adel Zourob Official shared the same list of those killed, which included 78 names. Social media tributes by family and friends helped Airwars to identify the names of a total of 84 victims who were killed in this incident.
Abu Eida family
In addition to the above mentioned sources, a Facebook post by Ahmed Abu Eida (son of victim Arafat Musa Muhammad Abu Eida) and a post by Reem Abu Eida helped to identify victims of the strike and their family connections.
Ahmed’s father, 70-year-old Haji Arafat Musa Muhammad Abu Eida (Abu Rami) was killed alongside his 35-year-old daughter Suzan Arafat Musa Abu Eida (Umm Yusuf), Suzan’s 49-year-old husband Nidal Muhammad Youssef Abu Eida, and their four children – their 14-year-old son Youssef Nidal Muhammad Abu Eida, 15-year-old daughter Shatha Nidal Muhammad Abu Eida, and between two and three more of their children identified by local sources as killed but whose names were not provided. Using the Palestinian Ministry of Health list of fatalities, Airwars has identified the names of two children of Nidal based on matching both middle names and surname, meaning that they were killed but there is no source directly mentioning their names as killed in this incident. Therefore, 11-year-old son Saed Nidal Muhammad Abu Eida and six-year-old son Adam Nidal Muhammad Abu Eida were likely killed in this incident.
Ahmed’s brother Rami Arafat Abu Eida’s wife (name unknown) and their five children, six-year-old son Hussein Rami Arafat Abu Eida and four daughters – 20-year-old Lama Rami Arafat Abu Eida, 16-year-old Maryam Rami Arafat Abu Eida, 13-year-old Rama Rami Arafat Abu Eida. Rami and his wife’s fourth daughter was mentioned by local sources as killed along with her family but her name was not found among local source reporting on this incident. However, using the Palestinian Ministry of Health list of fatalities, Airwars has identified the likely name of another daughter of Rami based on matching both middle names and surname: one-year-old Reda Rami Arafat Abu Eida was also likely killed in this incident.
Another granddaughter of Arafat, 16-year-old Raghad Yasser Arafat Abu Eida, daughter of Ahmed’s brother Yasser (Abu Abdullah) was also reported killed.
Arafat’s nephew and Ahmed’s cousin, 46-year-old Suhail Muhammad Youssef Abu Eida, was killed alongside his wife, 43-year-old Reem Ahmed Muhammad Ishteiwi Abu Eida, and their sons – 14-year-old Hayel Suhail Muhammad Abu Eida and five-month-old infant son Shihab Suhail Muhammad Abu Eida.
Ahmed’s aunt 71-year-old Amal Suleiman Hussein Abu Eida (Umm Nidal) was among those also reported killed.
Ahmed’s cousin Ayed Muhammad Youssef Abu Eida’s wife (name unknown) and their two sons and daughter, including son six-year-old Omar Ayed Muhammad Abu Eida, were also killed. Ayed and his wife’s other son and daughter were mentioned by local sources as killed along with their family but their names were not found among local source reporting on this incident. However, using the Palestinian Ministry of Health list of fatalities, Airwars has identified the name of a daughter of Ayed based on matching both middle names and surname: four-year-old Joan Ayed Muhammad Abu Eida was likely killed in this incident.
Ahmed’s aunt, his uncle Abu Imad’s wife (named as Fathia Abu Imad Abu Sharia Abu Eida in posts) was killed along with her three daughters, 27-year-old Salwa Ahmed Youssef Abu Eida, 21-year-old Sabah Ahmed Youssef Abu Eida, and 23-year-old Soha Ahmed Youssef Abu Eida.
Ahmed Abu Eida grieved the “Abu Eida clan massacre”, writing a testimony about the victims in his family: “My father, the crown of my head and the love of my heart, is a martyr. My older brother’s wife (Rami: Abu Adi) and his four daughters and his beloved son Hussein are martyrs. My niece (Yasser: Abu Abdullah) is a martyr. My sister (Umm Youssef) and her husband (Nidal Abu Muhammad) and her three sons and only daughter are martyrs. My cousin (Suhail Abu Sayel) and his wife and two sons are martyrs. My caring aunt, the owner of beautiful prayers (Umm Nidal) is a martyr. The wife of the cousin (Aid: Abu Ramz) and his two sons and daughter are martyrs. The wife of the late uncle (Abu Imad) and her three daughters are martyrs.”
67-year-old Haji Hassan Muhammad Abu Eida (Abu Nihad) and his wife 55-year-old Intisar Alyan Hassan Abu Eida were killed along with their daughters – Ghalia Hassan Muhammad Abu Eida, 15-year-old Heba Hassan Muhammad Abu Eida, 12-year-old Reem Hassan Muhammad Abu Eida, and 21-year-old Saja Hassan Muhammad Abu Eida and their sons – 37-year-old son Ziyad Hassan Muhammad Abu Eida and Ibrahim Hassan Muhammad Abu Eida. Ziyad’s wife and his two children, including Ahmed Ziyad Hassan Abu Eida, were also killed.
In a post from Reem Abu Eida just after the strike occurred, sister of Intisar, Ziyad’s children and wife were still under the rubble at the time but in a post from Reem on the one-year anniversary of his family’s tragic deaths, November 1, 2024, Ziyad, his wife, and his children were memorialized.
Reem Abu Eida also memorialized his cousin Umm Yassin, her children and her husband – as no names were provided, it is unclear if they are already counted among those killed or are new names, and therefore have been included in the maximum civilian harm death toll.
33-year-old cousin of Reem, Mahmoud Tayseer Mustafa Abu Eida, was also killed in the incident.
67-year-old Haji Shehda Obaid Ali Abu Eida, his daughter, 34-year-old Asma Shehda Obaid Abu Eida and his son 36-year-old Muhammad (Medhat) Shehda Obaid Abu Eida, along with the lives of Muhammad (Medhat)’s three children – six-year-old son Arab Muhammad (Medhat) Shehda Abu Eida, four-year-old son Omar Muhammad (Medhat) Shehda Abu Eida, and two-year-old daughter Al-Anoud Muhammad (Medhat) Shehda Abu Eida. The names of Shehda’s son and grandchildren were found on the Palestinian Ministry of Health list with the name “Medhat” instead of “Muhammad” based on matching all other familial names.
57-year-old Saeed Muhammad Muhammad Abu Eida was killed alongside his 25-year-old son Muhammad Saeed Muhammad Abu Eida, 15-year-old daughter Salsabil Saeed Muhammad Abu Eida and 28-year-old daughter Aya Saeed Muhammad Abu Eida. Aya was killed along with her husband 43-year-old Iyad Ghaben, their son Hamza Iyad Ghaben, daughter Raghda Iyad Ghaben and two other children whose names are unknown.
29-year-old Rawan Atef Ismail Abu Eida and her sister, 27-year-old Baraa Atef Ismail Abu Eida, were also among the victims killed in the strike.
26-year-old Muhammad Ali Obaid Abu Eida was killed alongside his 35-year-old sister Zainab Ali Obaid Abu Eida and his other sister Ruwaida Ali Obaid Abu Sharia Abu Eida.
Other female members of the Abu Eida family who had been killed in the incident were named as 52-year-old Jalila Freej Ali Abu Eida, Haja Mayoufa Attia Abu Eida, 38-year-old Maryam Ali Ibrahim Abu Eida, six-year-old Heba Muhammad Maher Abu Eida, 36-year-old Tahreer Maher Muhammad Abu Eida, 13-year-old Saba Mounir Muhammad Abu Eida, four-year-old Dalin Hussein Ahmed Abu Eida, one-year-old Sidra Yassin Saeed Abu Eida, 49-year-old Amal Attia Hassan Abu Eida, Hanadi Suleiman Attia Abu Eida, 44-year-old Dalal Hussein Youssef Abu Eida, Warda Muhammad Youssef Abu Eida, and 76-year-old Haja Sarah Obaid Muhammad Abu Eida.
Other male members of the Abu Eida family who had been killed in the incident were named as 20-year-old Ayham Iyad Hassan Abu Eida, 22-year-old Ahmed Youssef Ibrahim Abu Eida, 16-year-old Mahmoud Abdel Rahim Hussein Abu Eida, 24-year-old Khader Mufid Khaled Abu Eida, Mahmoud al-Abd Ismail Abu Eida, 27-year-old Ahmed Samir Youssef Abu Eida, and Ahmed Jamal Ibrahim Abu Eida.
A child of Mustafa Nimr Abu Eida whose name and age are unknown was also killed.
On social media, numerous loved ones mourned those killed in the strike. A Facebook page for the “Official Qatatawa Youth Gathering’ which is “concerned with collecting the latest news and events of the people of the [Qatatawa] tribe” prayed “may God Almighty bless a constellation of moons from the Abu Eida clan, al-Qatatawa, after the death of 80 martyrs and more than 60 missing and under the rubble who died as a result of the targeting of their homes in the Jabalia camp.”
Mohammed Adel shared a video (seemingly produced by the Palestinian Ministry of Interior) with the caption: “a massacre against my family, the Abu Eida family. There are dozens of martyrs in Jabalia camp.” The video showed the destruction of the residential area, rescuers frantically arriving at the site and carrying bodies away from the rubble, multiple injured people – some of whom were covered in blood – emerging from a destroyed building, and other casualties being carried into a hospital and treated.
Sharing photos of dozens of shrouded bodies lined up Abu Ziad Abu Yousef and Heba Z Abu Yousef wrote “May God give patience to your heart, my aunt, and give patience to your heart, my mother? Martyrs of Abu Aida.” Um Ahmed Abu Eida also shared a photo of the bodies wrapped in cloth, writing “My family’s martyrs. The Abu Eida family, the Six Martyrs Roundabout, approximately 80 martyrs.”
Karam Azeez shared a photo of himself smiling with “Muhammad Abu Eida” and described how “since the moment of the [bombing] and massacre of Al-Faluga, I have been trying to reach news about you, my love. I received news of you a while ago that you are a martyr. I bring to you the martyrdom of my friend and beloved Muhammad Abu Eida, his mother, sister and her husband.” The post then added that Muhammad and his mother hold Emirati citizenship, and had been in Gaza to visit Muhammad’s sister. They were supposed to have left Gaza before the war began but had to delay their travel because their mother was sick and bedridden. It is unclear which Muhammad that the post refers to because none were identified as having been killed with their mother.
Ahmad Abu Ashuor announced “with great sadness and sorrow, we mourn our dear brother-in-law, my sister’s husband, Muhammad Abu Eida, and the Abu Eida family in general, for the martyrs and those who fell victim to the criminal Israeli bombing of our people in proud Gaza…Our deepest condolences from the Abu Ashour clan to our dear brothers, the Abu Eida clan in general and the families of the bereaved in particular.”
al-Hanawi family
49-year-old Mustafa Muhammad Ibrahim al-Hanawi (Abu Sayel) was killed along with his wife, Rahaf Abdullah (Umm Sayel) (age unavailable), their 23-year-old son Sayel Mustafa Muhammad al-Hanawi and 13-year-old daughter Samah Mustafa Muhammad al-Hanawi.
Sayel Mustafa Muhammad al-Hanawi was a talented recent law graduate. Facebook user Suhaib Yassin shared a video of himself with Sayel Mustafa Muhammad al-Hanawi at their graduation, writing that “Sayel Al-Hanawi (my friend and brother) is my colleague in the Faculty of Law. We lived through 4 years of good and bad, suffering from studies, preoccupations, and class withdrawals. He was a very popular person (and we graduated together). The agreement between us was that we would be activists in the field of human and women’s rights and represent our country in international forums (we had great hopes and dreams). And ambitions but the [Israeli military] killed Sayel and killed the dream, and I was left alone, and I will continue on the path, be with me and your place is in the heart (and remember) Sayel is not a number.”
In another poignant Facebook post, Aziz H Almassri described the horror of losing loved ones in war, describing how “you open Facebook after hours of absence…you are surprised by the martyrdom of your beautiful friend, Sayel al-Hanawi… A hideous war that steals our best friends from us and sows grief and fear in the souls of those who remain alive.”
Abed Radwan shared a smiling photo of Sayel in his graduation robes, writing “my beloved Sayel Al-Hanawi, may God have mercy on you, forgive you, and grant you the highest paradise, O Lord…The one with the sweet laugh, the light spirit, and the one with the big dream was martyred.”
Rami Zaqqout shared a cheerful photo of himself and Sayel, writing “my brother, friend.. Sayel Al-Hanawi, is a martyr.” al-Qasem Abu al-Saeed posted a picture of himself hugging Sayel and prayed “May God have mercy on you, my friend.” Sharing a smiling “mirror selfie” with Sayel, Suhaib Yassin wrote that “My brother and beloved, dear to my heart, is a martyr. Two hours before your martyrdom, you were laughing with me during the phone call and telling me to be patient and we will make up for it after the war, God willing.” Waleed bin Abdelaziz Daher described Sayel as “a sweet and tidy young man with a pure heart.” Others including Yousef M Zaqout, Mohamed Mouner, Mahdi al-Rafati Abu Yamen, Iman jamal al-Rifai, Omer Hamdan, Karam Zaqqout and Saleh al Ajeez shared thoughtful tributes to Sayel as well.
Saher Saleem shared photos of Sayel and his father, Mustafa Muhammad Ibrahim al-Hanawi, writing “may God have mercy on you, Abu Sayel, Sayel al-Hanawi, and the rest of the family, who were martyred during today’s bombing of the al-Faluga area. Yousef El Hnawey shared a smiling photo of the two men and a child. Najah Haboub posted that “my beloved uncle and his family were martyred…Rahaf Abdullah, Abu Sayel Al-Hanawi.” Mahmoud A. Haboub mourned “the martyrdom of Abu Sayel Al-Hanawi, his wife and all of his children after the bombing of the entire square ?.”
Zuhair Shaqoura grieved the al-Hanawi family as well, namely “my aunt, Umm Sayel al-Hanawi, and my aunt’s husband, Abu Sayel al-Hanawi, and my cousin, Sayel al-Hanawi, and my cousin, Samah al-Hanawi.” Samooha Hosam, sibling of Rahaf Abdullah, wrote “Oh, my heart aches for you, my sister. I swear to God, my beloved, my companion compensates me for the separation of my mother and father. You rushed to leave, my dear, my beloved…My dear sister, Umm Sayel Rahaf Abdullah. Her husband is a good man, Abu Sayel Abu Sayel al-Hanawi. My dear, my love, I swear to God, dear to my heart, Sayel al-Hanawi and her daughter, Samah al-Hanawi.”
A 44-year-old man, Mazen Maher Attia Abu Kharis, was also named as among those killed.
Strike details and its aftermath
Facebook user Abdallah Omar gave further details about the location of the strike and those affected, explaining that “the area that was targeted in the #Jabalia camp is the Safi area, east of the Six Martyrs Junction, west of the camp. The [Israeli forces] bombed a number of residential buildings inhabited by residents and displaced people… Talk about a new massacre and dozens of martyrs!”
Hasan al-Faqeer drew attention to the repeated bombing of this particular area, writing that “less than 24 hours after the Jabalia camp massacre” adding that “In the al-Faluja area, tons of explosives were thrown on a residential square, and dozens were martyred and wounded.” In his post, Hasan also shared a number of photos of child and infant casualties who were being treated in a hospital, presumably following this strike.
A Facebook page called “‘Gaza Camp Now”’ shared a video attributed to the Palestinian Ministry of Interior (moi.gov.ps) with the caption “The first moments from the site of the targeting of the Shihada “al-Faluja” roundabout in Jabalia camp.” The clip showed dozens of dead and severely wounded people (including many children) arriving at a hospital.
Facebook user Rami Swailem explained that “these houses consist of dozens of residents, including children and women, in each house…” and highlighted the extent of destruction to the Jabalia Camp, expressing how “in the face of the recent aerial bombardment by [Israeli] forces in the al-Faluja neighborhood, I find myself profoundly speechless. The extent of this tragic event, which has resulted in a yet undetermined number of casualties, remains shrouded in uncertainty due to the extensive destruction and displacement that the entire neighborhood has endured.”
Photos tweeted by @ShehabAgency showed rescuers searching through a massive expanse of rubble, with one image showing a man carrying a child in pajamas who was covered in dust. According to the post, “Civil Defense and Medical Services crews retrieved a number of martyrs and transport the injured from the “al-Faluja” Martyrs’ Roundabout area in the Jabalia camp in the northern Gaza Strip, after it was targeted by [Israeli military] aircraft.” Alhaya.ps announced “massive destruction and large numbers of martyrs and wounded,” sharing multiple photos of the obliterated residential area, including one in which rescuers in orange vests attempted to excavate the body of a man from beneath a pile of shattered concrete. Similar images by Fi Alzaqzaqi News depicted the scale of destruction, with one photo showing a man sobbing and raising his hands in prayer atop a pile of rubble and another photo showing a group of rescuers carrying a man – whose condition is unclear – on a stretcher.
PalTodayTV and @ShehabAgency, among others, shared photos of the injured children being carried by medical personnel and reported that “a number of casualties arrived, all of them children, in the recent bombing of the Safi area in Jabalia camp.”
“Photos from the second massacre in the al-Faluja area in Jabalia camp” posted by Awdah.TV show rescuers searching through piles of concrete and personal items in an effort to locate people underneath. In one of the images, two men carrry a shrouded body on a stretcher. In the background, a group of people appears to be tending to another body.
Where possible, names have been matched with the Palestinian Ministry of Health (MoH) lists, which include national ID numbers. Since October 26, 2023 the MoH has released six lists, along with an additional list of medical professionals, which was released on September 17, 2024. Airwars is matching individuals to the first list where their name appeared. In regard to this incident, names are matched with multiple lists, beginning with the third ‘Palestinian Ministry of Health List of Fatalities in Gaza’ list, which was released on April 1st, 2024.
Where possible, the ages of victims have been found by cross-checking names against lists of fatalities shared online by Shireen Monitor, an organisation which has a list of “Martyrs of Palestine” from 2023 onward.
Where sources attributed responsibility, all sources identified the Israeli military as responsible.
The local time of the incident is unknown.
