Airwars assessment
Shortly before 11:24 AM on Sunday, November 5, 2023, alleged Israeli strikes struck civilians at the Al-Shati Camp market west of Gaza City, destroying multiple shops and also the home of the Abu Naji family in the camp. The incident resulted in the death of at least five and up to seven civilians and the injury of a number of others.
Two casualties have been identified as victims of the strike on their family house: 92-year-old Ismail Abdul Salam Ahmed Abu Naji (Abu Jamal) and his 35-year-old grandson Muhammad Adnan Ismail Abu Naji. Airwars’ researchers identified the age of the victims using Shireen Monitor, an organisation that has a list of “Martyrs of Palestine” from 2023 onward and includes thousands of names.
Shehab Agency reported the incident at 11:24 AM on Twitter/X, reporting on the casualties and injuries and the destruction of several shops. On Facebook, ShehabAgency shared similar news: “Martyrs and wounded as a result of the bombing that targeted the Al-Shati camp market in western Gaza and destroyed several shops.” The agency also shared a picture showing five deceased civilians wrapped in white cloth. The photo was also shared by the Palestinian Return Centre – London. Airwars researchers were not able to identify whether Ismail and Muhammad Abu Naji were among these five victims.
Similar messages about the incident were shared by multiple sources such as HalabTodayTV, Palestine Today Channel, Al-Shaala Newspaper for Media, @qudsfeed_brk, @YouthGoDigital, and civilians on both Twitter/X and Facebook.
@twfan60815 shared an eight-second clip on Twitter/X showing the aftermath of the bombing – the video showed huge crowds of people trying to find their way around the infrastructural damage to the camp market.
A relative of Ismail Abdul Salam Abu Naji, Hazem Abu Naji, posted his sympathies on Facebook along with pictures of both the deceased relatives – “Martyrdom of Uncle Abu Jamal and his grandson Muhammad Adnan Abu Naji after the bombing of their house in Al-Shati Camp. To God we belong and to Him we shall return.” The photos showed Ismail Abdul Salam Abu Naji as an elderly man wearing a light-coloured embroidered shirt. The picture of Muhammad Adnan Abu Naji shows a smiling man wearing a black cap, red shirt, and black jacket.
Ghassan Abu Naji, another relative of the deceased, shared on Facebook, “To Allah we belong and to Him we shall return. The martyrdom of my cousin/ Muhammad Adnan Abu Naji (Abu Adnan). And my grandfather’s brother Hajj/ Ismail Abdul Salam Abu Naji (Abu Jamal). After their home was targeted in Al-Shati camp. Allah is sufficient for us, and He is the best Disposer of affairs.”
While sources identified the two deceased victims, there is no information on the other victims.
Where sources identified belligerents, all sources attributed the shelling to the Israeli military.
