Airwars assessment
On the morning of Thursday, September 26, 2024, Hajj Abbas Dahini was reportedly killed alongside two other civilians in an alleged Israeli airstrike on his house in the town of Qadmus in Abbasiya, near Tyre in the Southern Governorate of Lebanon.
Abbas left behind his wife, four children, and son-in-law. He was from the town of Toura, southeast of Abbasiya. Multiple photographs shared by online mourners present Abbas as a middle-aged man with a bright smile.
In a Facebook post on September 27, the municipality of Toura stated that a funeral prayer was led by Sheikh Muhammad Hassan Ghabris at the town cemetery, after which Abbas’ body was buried. Pictures showed people gathered at the cemetery, and in one image, the Imam Sadr Medical Center of Toura could be seen in the background, suggesting that the municipality’s cemetery is nearby.
Source Ramzi Tounsi posited that the strike targeted a site “belonging to the Lebanese Hezbollah militia.” Airwars has not been able to verify this claim.
The images posted by the municipality showed individuals wearing vests identifying them as members of the Islamic Health Authority and others as members of the Association of Scouts of the Islamic Message. The former is a civil defense group associated with Hezbollah, and the latter is an AMAL-affiliated scouting organization. Both are political entities in Lebanon that—aside from operating their respective military wings—also provide social and organizational services in Shi’a-majority areas, including Southern Lebanon. The presence of these groups at the funeral thus does not indicate that Abbas was a militant; he is recognized as a civilian.
In a video posted by @TyrePage, filmed by someone who visited the site of the strike, the person recording says, “This is in Qadmus, above the house of [inaudible]. Here, I’m recording. May God protect everyone. The whole house collapsed here.” The video showed a destroyed house, rubble, and a burned, overturned car. As the person turns around, he adds, “The fire is still burning here,” followed by, “Three martyrs were taken from here.” The identity of these two casualties is unknown.
In that same video, a mosque with a small yellow/golden dome and a minaret on its left appears in the background as the video pans to the right of the house. When the video pans to the left, the sea is visible in the distance, down the hill behind the house – offering hints about the house’s location.
In another video posted by @AlJarasMagazine, filmed by someone recording the strike from a distance, the person can be heard saying, “A heavy airstrike on Qadmus… the hill, the Qadmus hill next to the school. Allahu Akbar.”
According to the Arrahman Islamic Centre’s Facebook page, a funeral service for Abbas was also held in Sydney, Australia, where they posted, “On this sad occasion, a condolence gathering will be held for his pure soul.”
Where sources indicated a belligerent, all pointed to the Israeli military.
The incident occured in the morning.
The victims were named as:
