Airwars assessment
In the morning of November 26, 2024, an alleged Israeli airstrike killed three members of the same family: Al-Hajj Fadel Amin Azan, his wife, Al-Hajjah Fatima Qasim Shukr, and their daughter-in-law, Al-Ukht Mona Ali Shabib by hitting their family house located in the Al-Saha neighbourhood of the town of Jibshit in Lebanon. A number of civilians were also reported injured as the family home was completely destroyed.
Lebanese news agency @Sa7atPl reported the incident at 8:50 AM, writing about the shelling of the residential house in the Jibshit and three casualties and a number of injuries resulting from it. Other news sources on Twitter/X corroborated this information, providing the same death and injury toll.
Following their killing, a widely shared image collage mourning the family features three photographs: a young woman, Mona, smiling; an older man, Fadel, squinting in the sunlight; and an older woman, Fatima, looking away from the camera and smiling. At the bottom of the image, the word “أمل” (pronounced “amal”) appears, which means “hope” in Arabic. This does not necessarily indicate an affiliation with AMAL, the political entity in Lebanon, especially since the way the word is written does not resemble AMAL’s insignia.
In Arabic, Al-Hajj and Al-Hajjah are honorific titles used to respectfully address elderly individuals, often in a religious context. Al-Ukht, meaning “Sister,” is a respectful way to address a woman. One of the sources referred to them using these titles.
The family’s home was completely destroyed in the strike, a fact corroborated by multiple sources, including the Egyptian outlet Youm7 and the Lebanese outlet Info3. In one image shared by both Al-Arabiya and Al-Hadath, thick smoke can be seen rising above multiple buildings in the distance, possibly from the strike on the family’s home. Multiple sources indicated that the strike also resulted in a number of civilian injuries.
According to social media sources Marwan Bu Nasser and Mohamed Fahes, Fadel and Fatima had already lost their sons, Muhammad and Abbas, earlier in the war. Marwan Bu Nasser wrote on Facebook: “After the martyrdom of the brothers Muhammad and Abbas Azan, Israel killed their mother, Fatima Shukr, their father, Fadel Azan, and their sister-in-law, Mona Shabib, in a direct targeting of their home in Jabshit.”
Where sources identified a belligerent, all attributed the alleged strike to the Israeli military.
The incident occured in the morning.
