Airwars assessment

At dawn on January 4, 2025, a declared Israeli drone strike hit a jeep on Salah al-Din Street in the eastern Satar area of Khan Yunis, killing six men – four of whom have been recorded as civilians and two as militants. It appears that at least five of these men were working as humanitarian aid security workers for Al-Aqsa Security and Guarding Company during the time of the strikes. Those killed were identified as 25-year-old Moatasem Raed Abu Jarad, 26-year-old Mahmoud Ayman al-Majayda, 37-year-old Mahmoud Basem Douhan, and 26-year-old Fahd Imad al-Din Ibrahim Abu Mustafa. Reports indicate these four men, as well as Muhammad Tayseer Jarghoun, Hussein Amin Jarghoun who have been recorded as militants for reasons outlined below, were working to secure aid distribution at the time of the strike.

The IDF released a statement on their official Telegram page that “Overnight (Saturday), the IDF conducted a precise and intelligence-based strike on armed Hamas terrorists in the area of Salah al-Din in southern Gaza. All of the terrorists targeted in the strike were involved in terrorist activities, which included exploiting humanitarian aid corridors. The strike was carried out at a distance from the movement of humanitarian aid trucks and did not affect the continued entrance of humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip.”

On X (formerly Twitter), several accounts reported the incident. @Safa_ps_news and @AlJarmaqNews first reported that an aid vehicle had been “targeted”. @Eslayeh and @AlAqsaGroup shared statements listing the deceased and confirming their role in securing aid. @AwdaChannel, @AlArabiyaPalestine, and @AlJazeeraChannel confirmed the strike location and stated it occurred at dawn. @24FM and @SafaAgency shared videos of the aftermath.

On Facebook, user Rania Khodary reported on “Martyrs of the Aid Security Company (Al-Aqsa Security and Guarding Company)”, writing that four individuals and an “unidentified martyr” were “targeted by a car on Salah al-Din Street”.

Family members and colleagues shared tributes for the victims, making it clear that the victims were mourned by many. Facebook users Ahmed [al-Majayda], Salwa Douhan, and Ibrahim Abu Jarad expressed grief over the loss of their relatives.

Nareman Bahaa and Ihab Douhan posted condolences for Mahmoud Basem Douhan, with Salwa Douhan sharing a photograph of Mahmoud in a thawb, sitting between two smiling young boys, possibly his sons.

A post shared to Facebook by user Sam Abdulhadi included an image of Mahmoud at a restaurant. Accompanying the photo is a tribute, in which Sam “mourns the passing of [his] sister’s husband”. He goes on to write that Mahmoud “passed away near the early hours of dawn as a result of a treacherous Israeli airstrike while performing his national duty with a group of his colleagues in an operation to secure aid for his people.” Sam closed the post with a prayer for Mahmoud. In the post, Sam uses the word “رفاقة” which has been roughly translated to “colleagues”, but can also translate to “companions”, “friends”, or even “comrades”. As Airwars found no indication that Mahmoud was a part of a militant group, he has been recorded as a civilian, assuming the civilian connotations of “رفاقة”. This will be updated should additional information come to light.

Another Facebook user, Mohammed Abu Mustafa, shared a tribute to Mahmoud, writing “You were worth a thousand men.” Mohammed added that Mahmoud was “One of the most skilled people I have known in the field of construction (bricklaying).”

Mosa Ammar and Abdulwahhab wrote tributes for Moatasem Abu Jarad, recalling his work, with Mosa Ammar sharing a beach photograph of Moastasem in a red polo, remembering him as someone with a “good memory, good character, and kind heart”.

Saslem Alakhras prayed for Mahmoud Ayman al-Majayda, asking that God “bestow His vast mercy upon him and to grant him a place in His spacious gardens,” while Al-Agha News, a site dedicated to sharing news relating to the extended Al-Agha family, reported that he was survived by his wife, Bisan Ihsan Ramadan Saleh Othman al-Agha. Ahmed [al-Majayda] emphasised the loss of his “beloved” brother: “All the words of condolence do not comfort me.” Ahmed later highlighted Mahmoud’s altruism, writing that before his death, he “used to go around among the needy and provide them with aid”. Photographs shared of Mahmoud show him wearing a suit and smiling.

On what appears to be Mahmoud’s personal Facebook account, his bio reads “The cause is (determined) by the Quran and the rifle”, followed by an emoji of the Palestinian flag and a green heart. This kind of phrase is commonly invoked by those supporting Palestinian resistance movements, including but not necessarily forms of violent protest. As there is ambiguity in this connection, and based on the fact that there were no other indications that Mahmoud was an active member of a militant group, he has been included among the list of civilians killed. This will be updated should additional information come to light.

Hussein and Muhammad Jarghoun have been recorded as militants. This classification comes from two posts, shared by Facebook user Hisham Jargoun, in which Hisham identifies Hussein by name, and seemingly also refers to Muhammad as his lists family members who were killed as well. In a post from January 4th, Hisham wrote that “The two had been part of the Palestinian military organization “Al-Qassam Brigades” for years.” In another post from January 6th, Hisham wrote that “The Palestinian Arab Military Institution honors its martyrs: Martyr Muhammad Taysir Jargon, “Military Intelligence.” Martyr Hussein Amin Jargon, “Field Unit.”” Hisham added that the two “ascended while on a mission to secure food for the displaced, oppressed, and grieving people.”

Some posts included video footage, such as one showing the mother of Mahmoud Douhan embracing his body. A video shared by Facebook user Eslayah showed the extensive damage to the car, including demolished doors and a shattered windshield. A later video shared by the same user showed Red Crescent workers transporting the bodies of the deceased.

Where sources identified a belligerent, all sources attributed the strike to Israeli forces.

The incident occured around dawn.
