Airwars assessment

At least seven civilians, including three women and three children from the Abu Saif family, were reportedly killed, and as many as 40 others, including four children, two men and an elderly woman, were injured in an alleged Israeli airstrike. The strike hit the Muhaisen family home and other residential buildings located on al-Houja (Al-Hawja) Street in the middle of Jabalia Refugee Camp in North Gaza, and the Yaffa Mosque around the time of evening prayers on Saturday, 4th November 2023.

Numerous sources, including Shehab Agency, reported that seven people had been killed and 40 injured in the strike on Al-Hoja Street in the center of Jabalia refugee camp. An image posted by “Press Window News” included the bodies of multiple members of the Abu Saif family, identified as victims of the strike on the Muhaisen family home. The identities of those killed from the Abu Saif family were announced on Facebook by relatives, such as Heba al-Kelani, and the names of all seven individuals have been matched to the Sixth Palestinian Ministry of Health list of fatalities in Gaza released on 15th September 2024. The ages of those killed have been identified via the Palestinian Ministry of Health list.

Forty-three-year-old mother Maha Mansour Abu Saif, also known as Umm al-Abd, was killed alongside all four of her daughters and one of her sons. Her daughters were named as eleven-year-old Mozl Fouad Abu Saif, thirteen-year-old Malk Fouad Abu Saif, eighteen-year-old Reham Fouad Abu Saif – who had successfully graduated from high school approximately four months prior to her death – and twenty-two-year-old Rawan Fouad Abu Saif. Her son killed in the incident was fifteen-year-old Abd al-Rahman Fouad Abu Saif.

Although not mentioned in social media sources in direct relation to this incident, forty-year-old woman Nihal Radwan Abu Saif was also identified to have been potentially killed according to Shireen Monitor, an organization that has a list of “Martyrs of Palestine” from 2023 onwards and includes thousands of names.

Fouad Abu Saif – Maha Mansour Abu Saif’s husband, who is also known as Abu al-Abd – was among the 40 people injured in the incident. Seven months later, on 25th June 2024, he wrote a Facebook post mourning his family, saying “May God have mercy on my wife and children and dwell them in his vast paradise… I swear to God that you are parted, but I ask God to join me with you in his paradise.”

He further posted on 7th August 2024 to remember his two youngest daughters, Mozl Fouad Abu Saif and Malk Fouad Abu Saif, who he described as “the most precious in the universe and the beloved of my heart, Malk, and my eyes and my soul, Mozl”. He posted a photo of the two girls holding each other and smiling at the camera.

Later, on 21st September 2024, he thanked a pilgrim for bringing up a photo on his phone of Abd al-Rahman Fouad Abu Saif in front of the Kaaba at the Masjid al-Haram in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. He wrote, “I thank the good man for what he has done with his life for my only son”.

Heba al-Kelani also mourned those members of the Abu Saif family who were killed in the strike, additionally expressing her sympathy for the particular loss suffered by Fouad Abu Saif. She wrote on Facebook, “O Lord, grant them a garden of Paradise where they will not feel alienated or lonely. O God, have mercy on them, forgive them, pardon them, and let them dwell in the Gardens of Eternity, O Lord of the Worlds. May God have mercy on my dear sister-in-law, Umm Al-Abd Abu Saif, her son Abd al-Rahman, and her daughters Rawan, Reham, Malk, and Mozl. May God strengthen our hearts, accept them, and gather us with them in the Gardens of Bliss, and grant you patience in their separation, Fouad Abu Saif.”

Sanaa Umm Emad, Fouad Abu Saif’s sister, further expressed her sense of loss and prayed for Fouad Abu Saif’s recovery. Also writing on Facebook, she asked, “May God have mercy on you, my beloved ones. By God, you have broken our hearts. May God accept you into heaven. May God give us patience to bear your separation, birds of paradise. May God heal you, my brother, and give your heart patience.”

A number of images and videos posted on social media depicted the scene and results of the strike.

Shehab Agency posted photos on Twitter/X depicting the aftermath of the strike. The images showed a completely destroyed building with a crowd, including Civil Defense members, attempting to search through the rubble. Rescuers appeared to be hampered in their efforts by a fire burning among the ruins of the building, which lit up the darkness of the night.

Qatari news network Al Jazeera posted a video on Facebook depicting the same scene. The video showed a large crowd of people, including the Civil Defense, frantically searching through the rubble of the destroyed building as smoke billows around them. Firefighters simultaneously attempted to tackle the blaze. The video also showed extensive damage to surrounding buildings, possibly caused by the same strike.

Shehab Agency, among other sources, further reported on Twitter/X that those killed and wounded were transported to the Indonesian Hospital for treatment. Images showed some of the wounded arriving for treatment. They included a boy, who appears to be a young teenager, with a severe gash above his right eye and his face covered with blood, as well as an injured infant and young girl, and an adult man being carried out of an ambulance on a stretcher.

Facebook user Fouad Bakhouche shared the images taken by Anas Al-Sharif showing two adult men with head injuries with their faces covered with blood as well as a huge blaze.

Najah FM also posted photos of two more of the wounded, including a young girl with a bandaged arm and an abdomen injury and an elderly woman.

Another image posted by the Shehab Agency on Twitter/X, and widely circulated by others, shows five of those killed in the strike wrapped in white shrouds and lined up together on the pavement of a street.

Multiple sources mentioned that the “house of Eid Muhaisen Al-Sabbak and the Yaffa Mosque” were both “targeted” in the strike during evening prayers.

Where sources identified the belligerent, all sources attributed the strike to the Israeli military.

The incident occured at approximately 6:00 pm local time.
