Airwars assessment
Six members of the displaced al-Atal family were reportedly killed shortly after midnight on 17 April 2025 when Israeli forces allegedly bombed their tent with a SkyStriker drone in al-Razan, an area of Beit Lahia near Kamal Adwan Hospital. Two of the victims were adults, and four were their children, all under the age of 14. A number of civilians were injured. Many sources emphasized that the entire family was killed.
Palestinian agency Safa was among the first to report the incident at 00:41, informing about “martyrs and wounded.” Later, at 2:05 AM, the media updated the information, writing about a death toll of six.
The attack was reported by Al Jazeera Arabic and PalTodayTV via Twitter/X, as well as other sources across social media websites. The majority of sources reported that the family’s tent was attacked in the area housing displaced people. Reports on the number of deaths varied from five to six, but this is likely due to the time of posting and limited knowledge of events at the time. Various sources, including Amal Farag on Facebook and Pal00970 via Twitter/X reported numerous injuries as a result of the strike but did not specify an exact number.
The video shared by Murtada Al-Jalal on Facebook featured a first responder who was reporting the details of the attack. He said that a tent for displaced people belonging to the al-Atal family was hit by the Israeli military in the Al-Razan area in the Beit Lahia project. He added that the strike happened around 1 am, and that eight people were rescued, six were killed, and there were several injuries.
42-year-old Muhammad Musa Abdul-Wahhab al-Atal (Abu Anas), and his 32-year-old wife, Islam Kamal al-Atal, were staying with their four young children in a tent in al-Razan in a camp set up for displaced people as a result of the ongoing conflict. Both of them were reportedly killed in this attack alongside their four children – their two daughters, Rahaf Mohammad Musa al-Atal, 13 years old, and Leen Mohammad Musa al-Atal, eight years old, and their two sons, Anas Mohammad Musa al-Atal, 10 years old, and Musa Mohammad Musa al-Atal, only three years old.
A post on Facebook from Qadya shared a photo of Mohammad and his brother, Mahmoud, who the post stated had been killed months earlier. In the image, Muhammad is a young man with a short haircut and a clean-shaven face, dressed in a red shirt.
Additionally, a post on Facebook from Sami Abu Salem referenced the al-Atal family during the 1948 Nakba. Sami wrote that their mother had told them that an attack on the village of Burir in the 1948 Nakba resulted in the killing of three brothers from the al-Atal family. Sami mourned the death of their direct descendants today in 2025 as the result of the reported Israeli airstrike, saying those who were killed today were the grandchildren of the brothers killed in 1948 and direct descendants.
Multiple videos, including from @M0SC0W0 on Twitter/X and Amal Farag on Facebook, showed the immediate aftermath of the attack. The video on Facebook showed people rushing to search the smouldering wreckage before fire took hold. The structure had collapsed on top of the family, and it was already clear that there were multiple deaths at this stage. In the video, the start of the fire beginning to break out is visible, as well as as secondary explosions spreading throughout the area. Screams can be heard.
In the video posted to Twitter/X via @M0SC0W0, the fire spread and was out of control and covering a vast area. People were throwing sand over the fire to try and dampen it, but all that was left of the tent was just the metal poles.
Where sources identified the belligerent, all sources attributed the strike to the Israeli military.
The incident occured after midnight.
The victims were named as:
