Airwars assessment
On the morning of Sunday, 22nd September 2024, a 25-year-old civilian man named Ahmed Al-Jalali and his seven-year-old son, Tamim Ahmed Al-Jalili, were killed, while his 30-year-old wife, Hiba Al-Jalali, and his two-year-old daughter, Taiba Ahmed Al-Jalali, were injured by an explosion of an unexploded ordnance reportedly deployed earlier by the Syrian Regime and/or the Russian military, which occurred in their home in the town of Kalali (Killi), north of Idlib, Syria.
A news article by the Syrian Civil Defense (also known as “White Helmets”) detailed that the explosion was most likely a result of the previously unexploded ordnance from the bombing perpetrated by Syrian regime forces and Russian military during the 13-year-long civil war. The SCD wrote that the victim, Ahmad Al Jalil, and his son were killed, whilst his wife was critically injured and his infant daughter was also injured during the Sunday morning explosion. The SCD added that the bodies of the man and the child were transferred to forensic medicine in the city of Sarmada.
Other reports, such as Al Furat post and the Thoer post, agreed on the number of injured and killed.
In a video shared by the Facebook account “The Revolution News”, eyewitnesses were telling the circumstances of the incident. They told reporters that citizen Ahmed Al-Jalali’s house was affected by the explosion of the remnants, leading to his death along with his son. The remnants exploded when he was trying to dismantle them. This was a strong explosion. The remnants were remains of the planes that dropped off these bombs. Ahmed also reportedly had some other remnants in his house.
Many sources shared a photo of the late Ahmed – he was a young man with light-brown hair and a trimmed brown beard dressed in a striped T-shirt and jeans. The sources also shared an image showing four SCD volunteers in uniform yellow vests and white helmets carrying one or two bodies wrapped in a white cloth.
A Facebook Post by Akabaer detailed that the explosion occurred when Ahmed was collecting scrap metal and was trying to dismantle war remnants, which caused the explosion. However, unlike the other reports, it reported the injuries incorrectly as his wife and a second son when it was his infant daughter. Turak post also confirmed that Hiba was left in critical condition. They also included photos of the destroyed kitchen, where likely the ordnance was being dismantled and then exploded, and the walls were splattered with blood.
The incident occured in the morning.
The victims were named as:
