Airwars assessment
Shortly before 6 PM on Friday, November 29, 2024, alleged Russian and/or Syrian regime airstrikes on the residential neighborhoods, Al-Andani fuel station, and Salah al-Din school in Idlib city resulted in the deaths of four civilians and the injury of 25 others, including eight children and six women. Rescue workers from the Syrian Civil Defense (White Helmets) were quickly dispatched to the scene to retrieve the dead, evacuate the injured, and contain the fires that erupted from the attack. The attack resulted in a fire at the station and the partial destruction of the school and residential buildings.
At 6:03 PM Syrian Civil Defense released a statement on Twitter/X describing the immediate aftermath: “Our teams responded to the attack and worked to treat the injured, retrieve the bodies of the dead, and extinguish the fire that broke out in the fuel station and a truck equipped with a fuel tanker in it, and inspected the targeted areas.”
The destruction at Al-Andani Fuel Station was particularly severe, as a fuel truck parked nearby caught fire, sending thick plumes of smoke into the sky. SNHR condemned the attack, stating: “On Nov 29, Syrian regime warplanes bombed Idlib city. The attack struck al-Andani Gas Station and Salah al-Din Ayoubi School, killing four civilians and injuring 25.”
The Nedaa post corroborated the death toll and injury count, confirming: “Four civilians were killed and 25 civilians injured, including 8 children and 6 women, as a result of the targeting of residential neighborhoods in Idlib city, Salah al-Din School, and Al-Andani fuel station by warplanes of the regime and Russia alliance.”
The same source shared pictures related to the alleged event. One of the pictures captured the aftermath of a devastating attack, showing a large building engulfed in flames as thick, black smoke billowed into the sky. The skeletal remains of a partially collapsed metal structure indicated severe structural damage, with twisted beams and debris littering the area. A fire truck stood nearby while multiple firefighters, dressed in protective gear, actively worked to contain the fire, spraying water onto the blaze. The pavement was strewn with shattered glass, mangled metal, and wreckage from the attack. A burnt-out vehicle smoldered in the foreground, its twisted frame a testament to the intensity of the explosion or fire that had consumed it. The surrounding environment appeared chaotic, with the scorched remains of the building looming ominously in the background.
Another image showed White Helmets volunteers running towards an ambulance in the middle of a dust-filled urban street. The buildings lining the road had their shutters pulled down, some appearing damaged, while others were coated in dust and debris. A thick haze, likely the result of recent explosions or heavy structural damage, hung in the air, partially obscuring visibility. The rescue workers, identifiable by their helmets and uniforms, moved with urgency, highlighting the immediate need for assistance in the area. A motorcyclist rode past the scene, seemingly undeterred by the destruction, while civilians in the background observed the rescue efforts. The street bore signs of recent devastation, with small chunks of debris scattered across the pavement.
Another picture depicted a harrowing moment as first responders and civilians worked together to retrieve a lifeless, charred body from the debris of what had been a gas station. The structure had suffered immense damage, with its canopy partially collapsed, leaving behind hanging wires and exposed metal framework. The ground was covered in shattered glass, broken panels, and smoldering wreckage. Thick dust filled the air, and the lighting cast an eerie glow over the scene. In the background, a man stood filming or taking photographs, possibly documenting the destruction for evidence or news coverage. The burned remains of the victim stood as a stark reminder of the human cost of the attack, while the responders, visibly strained, carefully maneuvered to recover the body amid the wreckage.
The White Helmets also shared a video of them rescuing women and children injured in the attack. The video captured an intimate and emotional moment inside an ambulance, where a White Helmets rescuer attended to two young children, held by their mothers, who had just been pulled from the aftermath of an attack. The rescuer, clad in a yellow vest with the organization’s name visible, gently held the face of a frightened child dressed in a blue jacket, checking for injuries or offering reassurance. The second child, wearing red, sat beside them, looking visibly shaken but conscious. Both children’s faces were completely covered with a thick layer of white dust, likely from the collapsed debris of a building, emphasizing the sheer intensity of the destruction they had just survived. The worker was seemingly trying to take the dust off the child’s face, either to help them breathe more easily or simply to provide a moment of care amid the chaos. The interior of the ambulance was bathed in artificial light, contrasting with the chaotic reality outside. Their expressions conveyed shock and confusion, their blurred faces a testament to the trauma they had just endured. The rescuers’ presence underscored the urgency of the situation as they worked swiftly to provide medical attention and comfort to the young survivors.
The attack also caused significant damage to the Salah al-Din School, where part of its outer wall collapsed. Civilians’ homes in the surrounding area were hit, and local residents described the devastation as one of the worst strikes in recent weeks.
Meanwhile, the Al Rahma Company, which employed three of the victims at Al-Andani Fuel Station, issued a condolence statement mourning their loss.
The Syrian Civil Defense and various local reports identified the warplanes as belonging to the regime-Russian alliance while the Al Sakher post directly implicated Russia, stating: “Russian occupation aircraft targeted residential neighborhoods in the city of Idlib, Salah al-Din School, and Al-Andani fuel station. The final death toll was 4 civilians killed and 25 civilians injured, including 8 children and 6 women.” In contrast, the @snhr attributed the strikes to Syrian regime warplanes.
The incident occured at approximately 6:00 pm local time.
