Airwars assessment
In the early hours of Friday, 30 November 2024, the Al-Furqan neighbourhood in the center of the city of Aleppo, Syria, was hit by an airstrike that reportedly caused the death of one identified victim, Saleh Abdullah al-Sahou, who, however, is classified as a contested militant given the details available, and the injury of a number of civilians. The attack has also contested responsibility and was attributed to the Syrian regime forces, the Russian military, and/or the Iranian militia.
First news on the strike was shared on Facebook and X/Twitter by local media sources, reporting extensive damage to civilian properties. Twitter/X user @7alpress also indicated that the incident took place after opposition forces took control of the neighbourhood.
The organization Shaam mentioned that the attack on the Al-Furqan neighborhood in Aleppo caused some injuries.
The details of the only identified casualty were shared on Facebook by user Nuh Ebu Muhammed, who posted the name and a picture of Saleh Abdullah al-Saho, described as “martyr […] in the battles of honour and glory in Aleppo, Al-Furqan neighbourhood.” The image shows the young man wearing a military jacket and a headscarf in front of what appear to be military maps. Given these details, this victim can be recognized as a contested civilian. However, the information available is not sufficient to classify him as a militant.
In the following hours, more images of the aftermath started circulating. Pictures taken immediately after the attacks, in particular, by @mhdshamaa, showed cars burning with smoke and dust filling the air. The morning after, the streets of the neighbourhood appeared littered with rubble and wrecked cars.
A video shared by the Twitter/X account @7alpress also showed the aftermath of the strike, where many burnt and damaged cars and even broken trees can be seen.
Another video posted by @syr_television on Twitter/X showed the effects of the airstrike carried out by warplanes on Al-Furqan neighborhood in the center of #Aleppo city, which caused material damage. A correspondent of the Syrian television said the following in the video: “A plane belonging to the Assad regime targeted this neighborhood (Al-Furqan) and the homes in this neighborhood in Aleppo. A lot of damage occurred in citizens’ homes. It’s near Al-Furqan hospital, which is in the same neighborhood. Warplanes have been carrying out several raids today, ever since the liberation of Aleppo.”
When sources mentioned the perpetrator of the attack, they were conflicting, with several sources attributing the strike to the Syrian regime or Russian military aircraft, while others also mentioned Iran and Hezbollah militias.
The incident occured after midnight.
The victims were named as:
