Airwars assessment

Shortly before 9:07 AM on Monday, December 2nd, 2024, it was reported that an airstrike with contested responsibility allegedly carried out by the Russian military and/or Syrian regime forces hit the vicinity of the Baghdad train station in Aleppo, Syria, possibly killing and injuring a number of civilians.

Twitter/X account @AlArabiya reported the strike at 9:07 AM. Later, this account posted a video capturing the moment of the airstrike.

The Facebook account of “Halab Today TV” reported deaths and injuries resulting from the raid on the Baghdad Station neighborhood of Aleppo.  A Facebook post by @Aleppo TV stated that a “massacre” occurred in central Aleppo, with a number of deaths and wounded civilians.

There is a lack of consistency in local reports, with some suggesting there were no civilian casualties. @SyriaCivilDefe, on Twitter/X, reported that Syrian regime forces and Russian airstrikes hit the Baghdad Station neighborhood, causing material damage. No civilian casualties were reported by the White Helmets, who inspected the site and cleared the rubble, although “basic services” for the civilian population were disrupted. Attached to the post were three photos that showed one member of the White Helmets hosing down and cleaning the asphalt.

The White Helmets posted the same photos on Facebook. Included in the Facebook post were additional photos that depicted the side of a residential building reduced to rubble. There are clear openings on the side of the multi-story block of flats where walls have been demolished. The photos were shared across other Facebook accounts such as @Syrian platform for press and media, and @Almanasa al sorya.

A different angle of the material damage was posted by @Hana halep. This post included a photograph of a collapsed roof located in the foreground of a grey and urban environment.

Facebook posts by @Halap today, @Aleppo of Martyrs, @Aleppo News Network Online, and @Here Aleppo News Network showed smoke rising behind a mosque. Aleppo News’ post was captioned with another reference to a “massacre”, although no specific figures were given with regard to injured civilians.

@Focus_Aleppo announced on Twitter/X that the areas also affected by the strikes were ‘Al-Hamdaniya, Al-Jamiliya, Saadallah Al-Jaberi Square, New Aleppo, Al-Furqan neighborhood, Al-Hamdaniya stadium area, in addition to the Aleppo Governorate building, the entrance to the University Hospital, and a complex that includes the Italian College, the Tricent Church, and a monastery in Al-Furqan neighborhood’.

While the vast majority of sources attributed the strikes to Russian forces, a few sources mentioned “Russian-Syrian” joint strikes while only one source, @ah1982sy attributed the strikes to only the Syrian regime.

The incident occured at approximately 9:07 am local time.
