A second possible drone strike on January 23, 2013 killed between two and four militants, with some sources noting that two children were killed and seven other civilians, including two children and a woman, were injured.
The Los Angeles Times reported the strike hit two motorcycles – its intended target – and killing the alleged militants. However local and international media reported the strike hit a house belonging to Abdu Mohammed al Jarrah, killing and injuring members of his family including two sons, one called Jebran Abdu al Jarrah. Al Jazeera visited al Jarrah’s derelict home in July 2013 and reported none of his family were hurt in the attack. He told al Jazeera: ‘We are not all Al Qaeda, we are normal people just struggling with life. We don’t know why we were targeted.
The strike hit at 8.30pm – half an hour after the Khawlan strike (USYEM148-C). Earlier in the day the province’s police chief narrowly escaped assassination when a bomb attached to his car exploded, killing his bodyguard.
A report titled “Death by Drones” from the Mwatana Organization for Human Rights quoted fifteen-year-old Musa Ahmed Ali ah-Jarrah, who was severely injured in the abdomen in the attack, as saying, “it was a U.S. drone” that struck the house, and he went on to say, “it flew so low I could view it easily.” The roof and second floor of the home was destroyed and Haykal Bafana described the strike via Twitter as saying the missile “entered the roof and exited the wall.” Mwatana reported that 19 people lived in the home that was hit and that at the time of the strike, a group of about 30 civilians had gathered near the house to watch the only television in the village, with the strike resulting in the injury of five civilians, including two children and a woman.
Musa Ahmed Ali ah-Jarrah told Mwatana “I heard a very loud sound of an aircraft flying in the air space of the village when I was on the way home. When I got close to our house, two huge explosions shook the whole place, hitting a house about 30 meters away from our house. I was hit with shrapnel in the abdomen. At that time, I fainted. I came to know of what had happened only later after I had been brought to a hospital in Rada’ city.”
The loud explosion damaged Abdoh Mohammed al-Jarraah, the owner of the house’s mother’s eardrum and caused hearing loss. Iftikar Abdoh Mohammed, a ten-year-old girl who lived in the house, was also hit in the head by shrapnel and sustained minor injury. The explosions also caused severe shrapnel injuries to two men, Jabr Jobran al-Jarraah, aged 24, and Abdoh Jobran al-Jarraah, aged 27, who were sitting outside the house. Jabr Jobran al-Jarraah was hit by shrapnel in the chin and throat and Abdoh Jobran al-Jarraah was hit by shrapnel on the left shoulder and left thigh.
A munitions expert confirmed to Mwatana from images of missile remnants that the remnants were from a Hellfire missile, fired by US drones.
Marib Press noted that a house was struck as what is believed to be a U.S. drone missed its intended target of a motorcycle. The report was supported by Almasdar Online, which noted that two or three suspected al Qaeda operatives were riding a motorcycle. Aloulaye News issued a report that two people on a motorcycle were killed while a home belonging to Abdu Mohammed al Jarrah was struck, killing at least one inside the house. There were two wounded from the strike, identified as Ahmed Ali Almnshei and the other was the son of Gibran Abdo. It is believed that as many as nineteen people were gathered inside the house.
China’s Xinhua news agency reported that the strike killed two children inside the house and wounded three others. The same report noted that four militants were killed.
Masdar Online identified the location of the strikes as in the Silat al-Jarrah area in the Wald Rabi’ district of Bayda governorate.
Where sources identified a belligerent, all sources attributed the strike to the US military.
The incident occured at 20:30:00 local time.
